The Cottage House, Bagalkot; Kabbur Architects

The cottage house designed by SuhasKabbur & Spoorti Kabbur of Kabbur Architects was an experiment to provide leisure of a cottage in a semi-urban area ie: Bagalkot (Navanagar). The requirement from the client was a simple 2BHK house with a feel to get away from home, as the client – two elderly occupants of the house were deeply inspired by the cottages in the western Ghats.

The house, located in the well-planned city of modern Bagalkot (Navanagar), with a plot area of 6,540-sq.ft and built-up area of 2,500-sq.ft. is a  home with less maintenance, as there were only the two elderly occupants in the house. The architects came up with the idea of building only the ground floor with a volume of double height which would benefit in designing a hot air escalation from all the living spaces, and in-turn give an experience of a cottage which has a huge volume.  As one enters, they see a courtyard. The courtyard acts as a buffer zone between the living spaces to the outside world giving a soothing effect. The courtyard also is the epicentre of all the activities in the house.

The furniture designed in a simple pale language is minimalistic with white and wood as its colour palate. The external walls of the house tune to be perpendicular to the sloped roof and form a unique facade. The conjuncture of the walls and the sloped roof creates a unique form yielding a unique identity to the house.
