The Jamia Hamdard University (Deemed University) has grown phenomenally in the last decade with addition of new programs and consequent expansion initiatives of the University with the support of Hamdard Foundation and Govt. of India.

The Smart Classroom Cluster is a Central Facility developed in the Library Building of the Jamia Hamdard University comprising of 18 Lecture Rooms and a Video Conference Room is an exercise in capacity building and has been designed as a state-of-the-art shared Central Facility of the University.  It is envisaged that this facility will cater for teaching in the Management, Unani, Pharmacy, Medical and Engineering faculties.  A multifunctional space is proposed in the central atrium to showcase various achievements of Jamia Hamdard University in the last 52 years.

The facility caters to 144 lectures during the day and the lecture scheduling is coordinated by the office of Dean Academics.  The hourly footfall in the building on full loading is around 1600 people including the students, faculty and staff, besides an average floating population of about 1000 students and faculty. To meet the requirements of circulation, three entry and exit points have been provided.  A landscape court has been planned as an interactive zone for the students and faculty and the central movement spine leads to the Proposed Faculty of Engineering. The salient features of the complex are enumerated in the following sections.

The facility has been designed to effectively and efficiently utilize the existing floor space of 34,661-sq.ft available in the Library building  in view of efficiently utilising space and the existing real estate asset of the university. The proposals in the Master Plan of JHU envisage effective space management within the faculty buildings by utilising the space occupied by classrooms and generating space for Research Laboratories, Centers of Excellence, New Academic Programs and development of new Academic Facility primarily for Under Graduate/Graduate Teaching while classrooms being transferred to a specialized central facility of the University. The allied functions comprise of Main Reception Lobby, Faculty Offices  with an Open Office Planning concept, Cafe, Public facilities and a AV Media Lab.

The academic functions comprise of 02 nos. state-of-the-art Lecture Theatres (capacity 140 students), 02 nos. state-of-the-art Lecture Theatres (capacity 100 students), 05 nos. state-of-the-art Lecture Theatres (capacity 85 students), 07 nos. state-of-the-art Lecture Theatres (capacity 70 students), 02 nos. state-of-the-art Lecture Theatres (capacity 50 students), 1 no. Conference Room (capacity 20 persons) with Video Conferencing Theatre facility, 2nos. Discussion/Meeting Rooms which have been Acoustically Treated and provided with state-of-the-art Audio Visual Systems and Modern Teaching Aids with LCD Projectors, Internet Connectivity, Media Lab for Audio and Video Recording, Content Management/editing and storage facilities for E-Learning and dissemination of information to students on Internet and intranet  All the lectures can be recorded simultaneously and will be networked with the data Center and an information system guides the  students to the respective classroom.

The Water Conservation strategies include use of auto flushing and auto closing faucets, low water discharge cisterns/Flush valves etc. The MEP Services Design include Fire Fighting System through Down Comer Pipes and Sprinklers etc. as NBC Requirements. The system design includes provision of Building Management System with an integrated approach combining all services and has been provided to monitor all the vital parameters besides indicating the equipment performance, faults etc. to the controller. All the systems selected are BMS compliant. The MEP services have been articulated around the principle of 4E’s i.e cost effectiveness, efficiency, economy through design and ease of maintenance.

The Electrical System has been designed with multi level safety mechanism, energy saving using energy efficient technologies and luminaries such as LED Lighting. The Electrical Panels has been provided to cater for enhanced load and will be interlocked with existing Main LT Panel of the Building. The Captive Power will be provided from the existing source which is proposed for up gradation as per Master Plan Proposals. The Air Conditioning System has been designed using Cassette Type/High wall Splits using Five Star Machines for energy efficiency and by implementing VRV Technology.

The Integrated Security System comprises of Access Control, Public Address System, CCTV, Fully Addressable Fire Detection and Alarm System which has been integrated with Electrical System and controlled access and monitoring system for security surveillance has been provided.

The entire complex has been networked to the Central Computer Network of the University with Internet Protocol and Wi-fi Connectivity supported by the secondary data enter networked to the main data center of the University.

The facility has been provided with state-of-the-art AV system, which include live streaming and video conferencing system of Cisco, Digital podiums, Short and long through projectors, a facility Controller which is operated through a tablet and controls HVAC System, Lighting, motorized blinds, AV and projection systems. The live AV stream of lectures is managed by the AV media lab where content management and editing is done and thereafter uploaded on the intranet for the benefit of the students and students enrolled in the Distant Learning Program. The audio-visual technologies support effective academic and administrative processes required by a forward looking global university in the 21st Century with a vision to achieve excellence in academics and research through global outreach.  In order to fulfill the desired objectives it was prudent to develop a facility holistically with complete integration of all the building components. The total Cost of project was Rs 8.36 Crores for the Smart Classroom Cluster.  The facility has been developed with seamless integration of functions, technology and supporting services.
