The Shiqule Nuhai is hand painted by Marcel Wanders.  Oversized vessels carry the weight of 17th century Chinese tradition appropriated and replicated in their own style by the Dutch. Replacing the regular cobalt blue used in Delft Blue ceramics with black glaze creates a powerfully stark contrast. Their majestic size recalls emperors placing only the loveliest girls within to transport them to be by their side on their journey to the afterlife.
