The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has formed teams which are carrying out checks in Mohali district, especially in Derabassi area
Many people have objected to brick kilns in Derabassi as they think that brick kilns contribute to air pollution. However, owners of these kilns feel that they are being victimized and they are operating the kilns as per the prevailing rules. Incidentally, the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has formed teams which are carrying out checks in Mohali district, especially in Derabassi area, where the maximum number of brick kilns are located in the district.
There are nearly 50 brick kilns operational in Derabassi and Lalru area, most of them are operating for the last 25 years. According to the owners of these kilns, pollution is not due to kilns but due to burning of paddy stubble. According to PPCB norms, the brick kilns are permitted to emit up to 750 suspended particulate matter (SPM). However, the residents want the kilns to be shut at least for one week and see the result.
PPCB has reportedly formed 100 teams of officials who are carrying out checks at the brick kilns even on off days. However, till date none of the kilns have been shut for not meeting the PPCB norms.
