Kolkata Gate, the construction of which began on March 6, 2017, will be thrown open for the public soon. Presently, minor pending works are being carried out and Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) will soon announce the inauguration date. The construction cost of the Gate has been around Rs 25 crore.
Kolkata Gate, the only of its kind in eastern India is a type of Welcome gate and is built by HIDCO. The gate is built in such a way that from visitors gallery one can see a lot of parts of New Town, Rajarhat and Kolkata.
Vector Designs, a Pune-based architect firm was engaged to make the design. The design was finalised by calling for submissions of designs through a public notice in the website as well as advertisements in newspapers. A committee headed by renowned architect Dulal Mukherjee was set up to finalise the designs from architects that were submitted from across the country.
The gate is about 55 meters in height. The monotonous tunnel made for the viewers will be approximately 25 meters above the ground. Visitors can climb up the lifts on one side of the Gate. Decorating the tunnels will be several photographs of the Bengal culture, with adaptation. The outer part of the entire tunnel will have lighting. The logo “Welcome to Kolkata” will be put up on the ring structure to greet the incoming vehicles.
