Indrayani riverfront to be developed

WAPCOS Ltd., a Govt. of India undertaking, has decided to develop the riverfront of River Indrayani, Pune in Maharashtra. Indrayani River in its 103 km length passes though hill stations, towns and agricultural areas, places of pilgrimage and industrial areas.  A consultant will be appointed who will study the entire stretch of the river prepare prefeasibility report.

A conceptual master plan for developing river front and bank areas in the vicinity of river will be prepared and the same will be sent to PMRDA for approval. Key locations in consultation with PMRDA will be identified for developing river fronts û these areas will have different themes based on the location of the stretch to be developed and potential use.

Apart from aesthetics, the river-front development shall give justice to the expected use of the infrastructure and clean environment should allow the users, in whatever number, to maintain the area clean and hygienic. PFR will be completed within two months of appointing the consultant.

The Indrayani River, which originates in the Sahyadri ranges, is an important source of drinking water for the Alandi town in Pune. It is classified under Class A-1 (Unfiltered Public water supply after approved disinfection). The Samadhi Temple of Dnyaneshwar Maharaj and other temples are located along the left bank of the river. Similarly, other important buildings such as the Municipal Council and the Town Hall and Library are located on the left bank of the river. The Alandi-Dehu Parisar Vikas Samiti has constructed a Coliseum along the right (southern) bank of the river.
