Old Kenilworth Hotel’s days are numbered and if you want to have a glimpse of this British era building you should do it at the earliest. Terrace of the building has already been removed and remaining parts of the building too will be soon consigned to debris as the new owners of the site want to construct a residential tower in its place.
Located near the junction of Middleton Street and Little Russell Street in Kolkata, Old Kenilworth Hotel was the “second oldest hotel in the city after Oberoi Grand.” In 2009, Old Kenilworth Hotel was listed a Grade IIA heritage building by the KMC in its Graded List of Heritage Buildings. But in 2017, it was downgraded to Grade III – a downgrade that proved to be fatal to its very existence as the rules provide that Grade III category of buildings can be demolished. Everything was done according law and no rules were broken, only thing that might have been broken is heritage conservationists’ faith in authorities’ ability and willingness to protect heritage structures in the city.
Old Kenilworth Hotel building was sold a decade ago to a consortium of builders who are now going to construct a 35-storeyed residential tower.
