Action against officials involved in Galiara Project in Amritsar

The Punjab government has reportedly acted upon the alleged corruption in a matter pertaining to the malpractices with regard to the Galiara Project in Amritsar. The Local Government Department of the state government has charge-sheeted 33 officials of the corporation cadre, who remained posted at Municipal Corporation Amritsar and dealt with issues regarding Galiara Project for dereliction of duty and willful violation. The senior town planner has been dismissed for allowing violation of building by-laws and unauthorized conversion concerning the Galiara project.

An enquiry was conducted into the matter last year and the enquiry officer had submitted his report in January 2016. The inquiry was conducted in pursuant to the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court into alleged violations of building by-laws for unauthorized conversion of residential buildings into hotels, serais and guest houses in and around the area of Galiara.

The Galiara Project was started with the purpose of decongesting the localities in the immediate vicinity of the Golden Temple Complex. The official name of the project is: Project for Re-development of the area around the Golden Temple Complex, Amritsar. The project envisaged co-ordination of various activities in the redevelopment process. It intended to facilitate speedy formation and implementation of the scheme and rehabilitation of the displaced persons in a time bound framework.
