How long the ‘statue of unity’ will remain world’s tallest?

When you write word statue on Google search first on the list appearing is statue of unity followed by statue of liberty. Two weeks old statue of unity overtaking century old statue of liberty is also partly due to the fact that former has now become the world’s tallest statue a record which was hitherto held by the latter.

The statue located on a river island facing the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the river Narmada in Kevadiya colony near Vadodara, was dedicated to the nation by the Prime Minister of India on 31stOctober 2018, birth day of Sardar Patel. The Statue of Unity, a statue of India’s first Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, is the world’s tallest statue with a height of 182 metres (597 ft).

But no man-made record will be permanent and will be broken sooner or later. The same rule applies to statue of unity. Do you know how long statue of unity will remain as the tallest statue in the world?

Before answering this question, a few words about the statue of unity.  The statue was designed by Ram V. Sutar who did a perfect job of the statue which gives the expression, posture and pose that justify the dignity, confidence, iron will as well as kindness that his persona exudes.  A consortium comprising Turner Construction, Michael Graves and Associates and the Meinhardt Group supervised the project. It took 56 months to complete – 15 months for planning, 40 months for construction and two months for handing over by the consortium.

The statue is divided into five zones of which only three are accessible to the public. From its base to the level of Patel’s shins is the first zone which has three levels and includes an exhibition area, mezzanine and roof. Zone 1 contains a memorial garden and a museum. The second zone reaches up to Patel’s thighs at 149 metres, while the third extends up to the viewing gallery. Zone 4 is the maintenance area while the final zone comprises the head and shoulders of the statue. The Statue of Unity is built to withstand winds of up to 130 kilometres per hour (81 mph) and earthquakes measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale.

Sardar Vallabhai Patel may be one of the tallest leaders of India but his statue near Vadodara may not remain the tallest for too long. According reports, the Spring Temple Buddha in China is planning to add its own podium and boost its height from 500 feet to 682 feet tall. If that happens, statue of unity will be relegated to second spot. However, the good news is that a 695-foot-tall statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji is slated to open off of the coast of Mumbai in 2020. But that deadline is as uncertain as 20/20 cricket match.
